Third Sector Glossary

In addressing the issue of digital transformation of the charity sector – or the third sector as it is commonly referred to – we repeat many terms. Therefore, we have created this glossary of the main terms and terminology used alongside our definitions for clarity and consistency.


Advocacy

The act of supporting and promoting a cause or policy, often involving efforts to influence public opinion or policy decisions.

Capacity Building

Developing an organisation’s skills, resources, and infrastructure to enhance its effectiveness and sustainability.

Charity

A legal entity set up exclusively for charitable purposes often focused on providing aid, assistance, or support to those in need.

Clients

A SoGood Partners term to describe organisations who pay us fees in exchange for services. SoGood Clients are almost always not charities. Clients can be Foundations, other non-profit companies or commercial entities looking for help engaging with the Third Sector.

Collaborators

A SoGood Partners term to describe organisations we work with in order to achieve our goals.

Community Development

Initiatives and activities that aim to improve a specific community’s well-being and quality of life.

CSR

Abbreviation for Corporate Social Responsibility – a business approach integrating social and environmental concerns into operations and stakeholder interactions.

Endowment

A financial asset donated to a nonprofit organisation, with the income generated used to support the organisation’s activities.

ESG

Abbreviation of Environmental, Social, and Governance refers to a set of criteria used by investors to evaluate a company’s performance concerning its environmental impact, social practices, and governance policies.

Fundraising

The process of gathering financial support for a cause or organisation through various methods, including donations, events, and grants.

Governance

The system of rules, practices, and processes by which an organisation is directed, controlled, and held accountable to its stakeholders.

Grant

Financial support governments, foundations, or other organisations provide to fund specific projects or activities.

Impact Assessment

The evaluation of an organisation’s activities to measure and understand its work’s social, economic, and environmental effects.

NGO

Abbreviation for Non-Governmental Organisation – an independent operating without government control, often dedicated to humanitarian, environmental, or social causes.

Partners

A SoGood Partners term to describe the charity organisations we serve.

Philanthropy

The practice of donating time, money, or resources for the well-being of others, often with the aim of promoting the common good.

Social Enterprise

A business that operates with a primary social or environmental mission and reinvests its profits toward achieving that mission.

Social Impact

The measurable, positive change an organisation creates to address social or environmental issues.

Stakeholder

Any person or group with an interest or concern in the activities and outcomes of an organisation.

Strategic Planning

The process of defining an organisation’s direction and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue its mission effectively.

Sustainability

The ability of an organisation to maintain its activities over the long term while fulfilling its mission.

Third Sector

The voluntary or nonprofit sector comprises organisations and initiatives driven by social or environmental objectives rather than profit. Charities are classified as being in the third sector.

TSO

Abbreviation for a Third Sector Organisation.

Volunteer

An individual who contributes time and effort without monetary compensation to support a cause or organisation.

Wellbeing

A state of overall health and happiness, often considered in the context of individuals or communities.
